After many weeks of hard work, the church was ready. The flower arrangers had produced displays with a golden theme. The exhibition which displayed artefacts, photos and other documents from Wednesbury Road Congregational church, The Glebe URC and Broadway was well received and revived memories in many of the visitors. The invitations had been sent out and acceptances received. We were ready.
The visitors began to arrive. It was difficult to get them seated as so many were interested in the exhibition which was at the back of the church, and in greeting old friends. Soon however the seats filled up and Alan, our organist and choirmaster began his voluntary. The Mayor of Walsall arrived, was greeted and escorted to his seat by one of our members Mrs Anne Bond. Our local MP, Mr Bruce George was also able to attend this special service.
Diana, our Minister led the service with Fraziska, our Associate Minister leading the opening prayers.
The order of service continued with the singing of the hymn ‘Let us build a house where love can dwell’ followed by a reading from Isaiah (ch55v12-13)
The Jubilee Banner made by the Pins and Needles group was dedicated and the choir sang Stanford’s Jubilate in B flat. Mrs Nancy McOnie led the prayers of Intercession after which the congregation sang ‘O lord my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the works thy hand hath made.’
Following a reading from Revelation (ch22 v1-5) The Young People of the church brought forward the time capsule which they are burying in the grounds. The closing hymn was ‘Lord, Thy Church on earth is seeking thy renewal from above’ Following the Benediction, and led by the music group, the congregation left the church singing ‘You shall go out with joy...’ And went into the.....
....... Celebration tea party which was held in the church hall and followed on from the service. It was buffet style and the tables had been decorated with golden balloons for the occasion. It was a meeting of friends and many who hadn’t seen one another for years were able to catch up on news.
Part way through the party Diana and Franziska cut the special Anniversary Cake.
